When it comes to a powder coating booth you really have three options. The first is to utilize a two stage filter set up and discharge to the atmosphere. This is not the most popular option because it does require make up air into the building space. This design taxes the building make up air and heat. It also requires exhaust ducting which can be costly depending upon the length of run.
The second option is to use a 3 stage filter set up. The powder booth is equipped with two stages of filters inside the existing filter bank. Then a filter box is installed on top of the fan. The filter on top of the fan is the final filter making the air sufficient enough to return to the shop. This filter design can be a labor intensive process as you will need to keep the filters clean manually. The second stage filter is usually a bag filter that will require vacuuming out. The final post fan filter will also need periodic inspection. As the filters clog up the air flow through the booth will decrease. A good indication that there is not sufficient air flow inside the powder booth is that you begin to see powder landing on the floor. The manometer supplied with the powder booth is a good indicator as well but the quick visual of powder on the ground is a sure give away of poor air flow.
The third option while costing a few more dollars initially is the least labor intensive method. This is to install a cabinet style dust collector into the rear wall of the powder booth. The cabinet dust collectors are generally self-cleaning only requiring someone to dump the waste tray periodically. The man hours spent vacuuming out filters is quickly made up when using a self-cleaning cartridge dust collector. This third option truly is the best industrial option when considering a powder coating operation sparing no expense.
